Black Bean Burger Sliders

Whether you love black bean burgers already, or are wanting to try them out, or want to have a unique dish to take to a gathering, then Black Bean Burger Sliders are the way to go!

When done right, black bean burgers can have a great smoky flavor similar to that of ground beef burgers. The key is that you want it to be juicy, but not mushy. This involves the right balance of WET ingredients (egg, barbecue sauce) to DRY ingredients (flour). So far for me, I like to use 2 eggs, 2 tablespoons of barbecue sauce, and 1 & 1/2 cups of Oat Flour

While the list of ingredients can be lengthy, odds are you probably have most of them in your kitchen already. Also, as you go thru the process of making the black bean burger mix, you’ll see that it has some similarities with mixing and forming cookies….

Pro tip: to elevate this dish to a higher level – after cooking the black bean burger patties, grab the buns & sliced cheese, assemble the sliders and bake in your oven for 5 minutes. They’ll be nice and crisp!

Does this have to be served immediately after cooking? Or can this dish be kept & keep warm for a while to serve after cooking?

This dish can do either! If you wrap each Black Bean Burger Slider in aluminum foil and place into an insulated container, the sliders can be kept warm for a few hours. Helpful when taking to a tailgate party after a Saturday morning long run!

Can any of this be prepped ahead of time? (say, the night before a Saturday morning long run)?

Yes! A great way to prep this dish ahead of time is to make the black bean burger mix, form it into patties, lay them out on a parchment paper lined tray and then place the tray into the refrigerator overnight. That way the next day, all you have to do is pull the tray out of the refrigerator, fry the patties on a stove top skillet, and assemble the sliders.

  2. Turn your oven on to 400 degrees
  3. Lay out black beans on a parchment paper lined baking sheet & cook in oven for 10 minutes
  4. Remove tray of black beans from oven
  5. Scoop black beans into a bowl and mash them using a fork or other mashing tool.

Mixing and preparing the Black Bean Burger Patties

  1. In a large bowl, add mashed black beans, oat flour, feta cheese, southwest seasoning, cumin, barbecue sauce, and egg
  2. Dice up the purple onion using a dicing tool or chefs knife + cutting board
  3. add 2 tablespoons of Olive Oil & 2 tablespoons of garlic powder to a skillet to turn stove top burner on to medium high heat
  4. Add diced purple onions to the skillet and sautee for 7 minutes.
  5. Remove diced onion from skillet and add to large bowl containing the rest of the ingredients
  6. Mix everything in the large bowl togeher. The mix should be solid enough so that it can form small patties, but soft/liquid enough so that the mix doesn't separate
  7. Use a small ice cream/cookie scoop to scoop out 1 patty amount at a time, and lay the scoops out on a parchment paper lined baking sheet
  8. Use a spatula to flatten the scoops into burger patties.

Cooking and assembling

  1. Turn your stove top burner on to medium high heat and add several patties to your skillet
  2. Cook the patties for 2 minutes on each side, then flip over. The patties will brown, similar to a beef patty
  3. Once cooked, assemble the sliders with brioche buns, sliced cheese, and enjoy!

  1. These look so good! Would regular flour work just as well? Looking forward to trying the recipe!

Thank you! You can definitely use All Purpose Flour, but you might want to use slightly less (maybe 1 1/4 cups). I’ve used All Purpose Flour in this recipe before, and found if I wasn’t careful with the amount, it would cause the patties to be a bit dry. Good luck to you!
